Busting Shrimp Farming Myths

Myth: SPF Shrimps are resistant to all diseases
No, they aren’t. Specific Pathogen Free (SPF) Shrimps are those that are tested and free from specific pathogens. This is done using a PCR test that can detect the presence of any antigen. Infected shrimps are removed and only the uninfected shrimps are kept. Since all of this happens in the hatchery, one can be sure that the source of infection is not the hatchery!
Generally, ‘Biosecurity’ plays a major role in increasing the productivity of a farm. In this case, since we already have ‘clean’ shrimps investing on excellent bio security measures to ensure that shrimps don’t get infected by any external pathogens can increase productivity!
Myth: Shrimps exhibit cannibalistic behaviour
Yes, Shrimps are cannibals. They eat anything and everything they find in the pond. If you find a group of shrimps crowded around a dead fellow mate, chances are they might actually be relishing it! There is no need to be alarmed since feeding on a dead shrimp improves its own exoskeleton (Facts say!). One or two dead shrimps here and there is fine. One should be worried if there is a group shrimps lying around dead.
Myth: Farmed shrimps don’t taste good!
No, there is no study that proves farmed shrimps don’t taste good. There is no denial to the fact that wild shrimp might taste a little better because of the natural food it consumes. But farmed shrimps are no less. With the increased demand for shrimp production relying only on wild caught shrimps would be practically impossible.
Look for quality shrimps so that there is no compromise in taste/health. Luckily there are bodies that ensure shrimps are raised according to certain guidelines (Thank Goodness!) viz., prohibits the usage of antibiotics etc.
